U.Ve.Sa. in Sri Meenakshisundaram Pillaiavargal sariththiram (preface, Vol 2.) writes….
“உடலை வளர்த்தற்குரிய பலவகையான பொருள்களை வழங்கும் அறங்களினும் உள்ளத்தின் உணர்வு வளர்ச்சிக்குக் காரணமான கல்வியை வழங்கும் வள்ளன்மை சிறந்ததாக ஆன்றோர்களால் எக் காலத்தும் மதிக்கப்படு கின்றது. ஒருமைக்கண் கற்ற கல்வி எழுமையும் பயன் தருதலால் அதனை வழங்கும் பெரியோர்கள் உலகில் உயர்ந்தவர்களாகவும் பேருபகாரிகளாகவும் எண்ணப் படுகின்றனர். அவர்கள் செய்த பேரறத்தின் பயனாகவே கலை வளம் சிறந்து விளங்குகின்றது. மக்களுடைய மன உணர்வைப் பண்படுத்தும் அப்பெரியோர்கள் செய்த அருஞ்செயல்களும் இயற்றிய நூல்களும் எல்லோராலும் போற்றப்பட்டு வருவது யாவரும் அறிந்ததேயாகும். காலதேச வர்த்தமானங்கள் எங்ஙனம் மாறினும் அத்தகைய புலவர் களுடைய புகழ் குன்றாமல் ஒரே நிலைமையில் நிலவி வருகின்றது. சிலருடைய புகழ் வளர்ச்சியுற்றும் வருகின்றது.
இங்ஙனம் புகழ்பெற்றுத் தமிழ்நாட்டில் விளங்கியவர்களுள் திருவாவடுதுறை ஆதீனத்து மகாவித்துவானும் என்னுடைய தமிழாசிரியருமாகிய ஸ்ரீ மீனாட்சிசுந்தரம் பிள்ளையவர்களும் ஒருவராவர். இவர்கள் 19ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் 1815ஆம் வருஷம் முதல் 1876ஆம் வருஷம் வரையில் இருந்து விளங்கியவர்கள்.”

Today (15 Feb 2023), a little more than a year since I started reading the book…,
… this is how it looks!
I have learned a great deal about Mahavidhvan Meenakshisundaram Pillai. Right from his birth, how he passionately searched for knowledge; how he got it; then, how he used it; how he shared it; how he served Tamil, and so on…
U.Ve.Sa’s elegant writing makes the reading, more like watching a movie, as if you are growing up with the Mahavidhvan witnessing how their lives unfold.
I have taken notes as I traversed time with them. But today after reading page 234, I deliberately closed the book and became withdrawn and pensive…
What happened?!
Today, to my dismay, came to know Mahavidhvan Meenakshisundaram Pillai is sick and his health has deteriorated to such an extend that he wrote/dictated his last செய்யுள்.
Is this what a book can do to you?!
As I was reading, Pillaiavargal’s illness has made his legs and lower abdomen swollen, and his shoulders down. His food intake has greatly reduced and his energy level downed, I was saddened to see the great Mahavidvan whose rays brought light to this world being covered by the passing clouds – the act of fate…
I could not take it. If I continue reading the next few pages, I am sure I will read about how he left his mortal body,… but I stopped there…
கொடுப் பவனாக இருந்தால் எ[உ]ன்னைக் கேட்டுத்தானா கொடுப்பான்?
Mahavidhvan Meenakshisundaram Pillai and his glorious (selfless) life stands high as an example for us – even after a century or so. So, what are we to gain by knowing how he left his mortal body?
Isn’t it imperative that we first learn how to Live like him, with utmost honesty, high morality, extreme generosity, and high integrity?
I am sure I will be turning the pages of time, (re)reading how a shy and curious boy became Immortal by his way of life dedicating it all to Tamil…
And I hope you will personally read, live, and eventually become ஸ்ரீ மீனாட்சிசுந்தரம் பிள்ளையவர்‘s student…

“இப்புலவர் பிரானால் தமிழ் மக்கள் பெற்ற பயன் மிகப் பெரியதாகும். புதிய புதிய நூல்களை இயற்றித் தமிழ் நயங்களை அமைத்துக் காட்டிய இவருடைய செய்யுளால் பலவகைச் சுவைகளை அறியும் பயனைத் தமிழ் மக்கள் பெறுகின்றனர். புது நூல்களை இயற்றியதோடு நில்லாமல் தாம் வருந்தித் தேடிய பழைய நூல்களை விளக்கி வைத்த இவருடைய செயல் தமிழ் நாட்டாரால் என்றைக்கும் நினைக்கத் தக்கதாகும். தமிழ்ப் பாடஞ் சொல்லிச் சொல்லி மாணாக்கர் கூட்டத்தை வளர்த்து அவர்கள் மூலமாகத் தமிழறிவைத் தமிழ் மக்களுக்குப் பயன்படச் செய்த வள்ளல் இவர். எங்கெங்கே தமிழ் நூல்களை முறையாகப் படித் தறியும் உணர்வும் பழைய புராணங்கள் பிரபந்தங்கள் முதலியவற்றைப் பயின்று இன்புறும் இயல்பும் திசுழ் கின்றனவோ அங்கெல்லாம் இவருடைய தொடர்பேனும் இவர்பால் பாடங் கேட்டவர்களுடைய தொடர்பேனும் பெரும்பாலும் இருக்கும். இன்றளவும் ஓர் அளவில் புலவர்களுடைய நூல்களின் பால் உள்ள மதிப்புக்கு மூல காரணம் இவர் என்றே சொல்லலாம். தமிழ்த் தெய்வத்தின் திருத் தொண்டர்களாகித் தமிழகத்தைத் தமிழன்பில் ஈடுபடுத்திய பெரியார்களுடைய வரிசையில் இவரும் நிற்பர். தமிழ்நூல் கோவைகளில் இவருடைய நூல்களும் முத்துக்களைப் போல விளங்குகின்றன. இனியும் அவை தமிழ் மக்கள் உள்ளத்தில் இன்பத்தை உண்டாக்கிக் கொண்டே என்றும் குன்றா இளமையோடு விளங்கும். அவற்றை ஊன்றிப் படிப்பவர்கள் பிள்ளையவர்களின் புலமை உருவத்தை உணர்ந்து மகிழலாம். தமிழ் உள்ளளவும் இவருடைய பெரும் புகழ் நின்று நிலவு மென்பது திண்ணம்.”
