The Spider’s Voice!

I woke up, today, early in the morning, with a dry mouth and when I raised my head to drink a glass of water I saw a spider hanging tight on to their delicate network of webs.

My first thought was, “Oh, that’s a strange-looking spider. What if it is poisonous and bites the kids? Better kill it before it harms anyone or gets bigger or infests.”‘ Then I noticed a smaller spider and a rest (hive?). Is that a mother spider, its child, and its nest?

As I keenly looked closer, the big spider got alert and started to shake certain threads on the web using some of its eight legs. I could distinctly see the web threads vibrating towards the smaller spider. On feeling (?) the vibrations the small one turned towards the bigger one and started to crawl…

Like a curious kid looking at a magnetic needle magically suspend itself over a pivot, in the air, due to invisible forces, I too looked at it curiously…

Until the smaller spider reached the mother(?) spider, the mother at regular intervals was shaking the webs as if it was communicating with it. IS THAT HOW SPIDERS COMMUNICATE? DO THEY HAVE VOICES TOO? I WONDERED…

Did you know:

The spider’s world is one of vibration. Essentially blind, the web-building spider creates an image of the world through the vibrations it sends and receives through the web, which also functions as an organic and specialised instrument for transmitting these seismic signals. The spider/web is thus considered a material extension of the spider’s own senses, and—some argue—of its mind.

Spider silk can vibrate at a wide range of frequencies. When the spider ‘plucks’ the silk strands of the web it creates ripples in every direction, longitudinal vibrational waves that the spider can feel in each of its eight legs.

Scientists have recorded the frequencies of a vibrating spider web have been made into music…

Here is how it sounds…

After a glass of water, and curiously reading about Spiders, I was fascinated (by their way of life) and headed back to my bed to continue my sleep…

Some thoughts

Just like a spider's web, we too build a web of memories..., don't we?!
(Some even gets entangled in it! 😁)
Just like the musical strings, do the spiders also decide how thick certain web threads need to be, and how long it has to?!

DISCLAIMER: No Spiders were killed or hurt or disturbed (at least not intentionally)…
