ALERT: The Title and First Few Pages missing…

Yesterday (on 15/Aug/2022) with a good friend visited Tambaram area looking for good old books.

We tried our luck first at the East Tambaram Annai Book Store, then Firdouse Book Store, and finally we found out way go the West Tambaram Annai Book Store. There we hunted down three books (two for my friend and one for me.)

The book I bought was (no surprise) an old Tamil book. Its pages withheld the effects of time and foxed well for its age. The book covers were missing but the binding was decent. Well, it also missed a few pages – including the title page! The text block started from page 17, but that didn’t stop me from buying it because the book looked 60-70 years old and the price was right!

After returning home as usual connected with Dr Thiyagarasan (BT Appa) to check if he can help me identify the book. We tried… but in vain…

My next try was Google but even its sophisticated search engine couldn’t find any match and I was stuck.

As I lay on the bed, in the night, I couldn’t stop thinking about the book, its missing pages and what its content would be. How easy would it be for one to know the contents of a book just by reading its title, or the author who wrote it! Moreover, how good it would be to read a book from its first to the last page… and understand all its deep contents…

Not all the time we could know the details of the author/creator, his work’s title, or its contents in its entirety… (Philosophical isn’t it?)

As I couldn’t find the title or its author, I decided to list down all its chapters, and sections, and then try my luck identifying what the book is all about?!

நரேந்திரர் பரமரை நாடிய படலம்

When I saw this section it struck me that Swami Vivekananda’s original is Narendranath Datta (called, Narendar; born 1863 – died 1902) and his guru was Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (called Paramar; born 1836 – died 1886).

Is this book Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s biography in Tamil poetical form?! It seems so…

Do you know how Narendranath Datta become Swami Vivekananda…

In 1881, the historic meeting of these two great souls happened, the prophet of modern India and the carrier of his message. Narendra was then 18 years of age. He entered Ramakrishna’s room with some friends and sang a few songs on his request. Ramakrishna went into a samadhi listening to these songs. A few minutes later, Ramakrishna took Naren by his hand and led him outside. There he addressed him tenderly and spoke to him as though he knew him for a long time. He asked him, “Why have you come so late? Why were you so unkind and made me wait for this long?” He addressed Naren as Narayana born on earth to remove the misery of humanity. He held his hand and asked him to come again, alone and very soon. Naren was startled and wondered why he had come this far to see a mad man. But returning to the master’s room, Naren found in Ramakrishna’s words an inner logic, a striking sincerity and a convincing proof of his spiritual nature. In answer to his question “Sir, have your seen God?”, Sri Ramakrishna answered “Yes I have seen Him just as I see you here, only more intensely”. Naren had finally found someone who could assure him from his own experience that God existed. His doubt was dispelled and that was to be the beginning of his initiation and training. This was just the first of several meetings between them and soon Naren became convinced of Ramakrishna’s spiritual attainment and became his most ardent devotee.

Well I bought this Tamil book at the West Tambaram Annai Book Shop, and my friend bought 2 Personality Development (English) books.

When I requested my friend to share photos of the two books he bought yesterday, he shared the photos!

As I didn’t buy any books at Firdouse book shop, I didn’t look at the book titles he bought. All I remembered were the two books he bought at the West Tambaram Annai Book Store. When he shared the three booklets photo I was surprised…

Should I say it’s a coincidence that some of the works of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda found him, and me in different forms on the day, even without our knowing?! What do you say of that????

In the end, it doesn’t matter which page you start, or the title of the book, all that matters is how one reads the pages and reaches the end, enlightened… 🙏🏾
